Document Strategy Podcast Episode 34 with Host Kevin Craine

Using QR Codes in Cross Media Marketing

QR codes are getting a lot of attention these days. The development and application of QR codes, used in conjunction with mobile communications and smart phones, some say, represents a revolutionary breakthrough in cross-media marketing.

These small two-dimensional “quick response” barcodes are interpreted by the camera function on your smart phone and can then display information directly on the your phone, or take your phone’s browser directly to a personalized web page, online video, and more.

Just now catching on in the United States, QR codes are quite popular in Japan and Europe. The potential to use QR codes to reach new customers is growing, especially as the general marketplace becomes more mobile.

That’s what we’ll be discussing on this month’s podcast with Stephen Poe, a document and communications systems expert who will help us make sense of the technology and better understand how to design strategies to leverage the benefits of this cutting-edge cross-media marketing tool.

Social Media – Leveraging the Customer Conversation

Everyone is talking about social media these days, and for good reason. If you are not involved with social media marketing you are missing out on a tremendous opportunity.

But most of the focus on social media is centered on ways to reach out to customers and foster relationships. Very little discussion is centered on using social media to understand what customers are saying about your company and their experience with your products and services.

What customers are saying about your company in social media can dramatically impact your brand equity if you are not actively managing the “customer conversation.” What can you do to uncover risks to your brand and unearth new opportunities in the marketplace?

We’ll explore all of this and more in this episode of the Document Strategy Podcast.

Managing the Cycle of Change; plus report from OnDemand/AIIM conference

The world of documents and communication is changing. But one very influential factor to the success of any document strategy that is often overlooked is the natural and emotional reactions that people have when things change.

How can you mitigate the negative effects of people’s reactions as you implement changes in technology? In this month’s podcast we’ll explore ways to manage “The Cycle of Change” from chapter six of the book “Designing a Document Strategy.”  The concepts have been receiving attention in the international academic community so we thought it would be a good topic for this episode of the podcast.

Also in the broadcast is a live report from the OnDemand / AIIM360 conference in Washington, DC with reporter Pat McGrew. She’ll clue us in on what was hot and what was not at this year’s event.

Personalization, Privacy and the Data Dilemma

There is been a lot of buzz about personalized documents these days. The concept of customizing direct mail, transactional documents like bills and statements, and even personalized web pages with targeted messaging aimed at wooing existing customers and gaining new customers. Vendors and pundits extol the value of using the date collected about customers, accounts and buying habits to create communications that will rise above the din of competitive messages.

Indeed, research shows a rather dramatic increase in response rate when personalizing documents and marketing communications. And new social media and mobile technologies take things a step further allowing companies to reach out to customers in new ways with relevant and targeted promotions and content.

These transpromotional and one-to-one strategies depend on one thing. Data. Data collected about customers, accounts and activity…demographics and behaviors…and even info about your family, your location and your buying habits. This raises some complicated and sometimes controversial issues surrounding privacy, security and customer perception.

We’ll be exploring this “Data Dilemma” in this episode of the podcast… strategies and tactics that help leverage the power of personalization while avoiding the pitfalls of privacy and data security.

If you are looking to boost your marketing success through transpromo strategies and document personalization, but are struggling to overcome the Data Dilemma, you’ll find some valuable tips and perspectives in this month’s podcast.

Automated Document Factory Best Practices

What is an “Automated Document Factory?” Ever since the term was first coined in the in the mid 1990’s the concept has lived on with varying definition and differing application. In this episode we’ll discuss the various techniques and strategies that can help you take advantage of an ADF.

An Automated Document Factory is a strategy for processing high-volume documents using factory production techniques with the aim to bring about lower costs, higher quality, and greater control. Advanced levels of automation characterize a classic ADF. Integral to the broader concept are complete print and mail piece tracking, integrated data and integrity checks throughout, and real-time process performance auditing and reporting.

Our guest on the podcast is an expert in automated document factory techniques and strategies. Paul Abdool is the current chairman of the board at Xplor International and a print/mail practice manager in the consulting services division of IKON. Paul gives his perspective on ADF best practices, and his advice for companies and document industry professionals looking to take advantage of the techniques.
